Quite Nights Light My Fire

I was looking for Astrud Gilberto singing "Triste" which, despite its popularity among the bossa nova set*, I can't find. I did find her covering The Doors' 'Light My Fire' so all of the agonizing and clicking was seemingly worth it.

*Ok, you would think that it would be ultra popular.

Off the Wall BBs

This is no mere parody. It is a hagiography of the man and myth in Turkish walrus form.

A New POC-Centered Press

Verb Noire

"The mission:

To celebrate the works of talented, underrepresented authors and deliver them to a readership that demands more.

What does that mean? That if you're a talented writer with an awesome, original story about a POC girl/guy/transgendered character, there is a place for you. And that if you're a sci-fi/fantasy fan who has grown tired of the constant whitewashing of these genres, there is a place for you, too.

Now that isn't to say that we will accept ANY ol' manuscript as long as it features a POC protagonist, because we will NOT. What we're looking for is quality, soul and PASSION, something that will resonate with readers for years to come.

"Everyone has a story." These words are the driving force behind this project, because we believe that EVERYONE has at least one good story in them, and that story demands to be shared with the world.

As start-up costs can be enormous, we're relying on the generosity of strangers to help us launch. So far, you guys have been absolutely fabulous in donating your money, time and effort, and we hope you will continue to do so as we grow. Even if you can't volunteer at this time, feel free to spread the word (and the widget) around."

If you're so inclined, you can copy the code of the widget for your sidebar. And, while they've already reached their initial goal, more monetary donations are always appreciated. They've also posted their submission guidelines.

I Should Go

...to this, but I know that I would hate most of the music. Yet, it sounds like so much fun and it's cheap ($20) and takes place over 4 nights in 15 different places. Also, there's a couple of bands where at least one of the members plays what looks to be an old washboard. That has to be good for something.

OIC

I guess nothing really spoke to me this season. Though, I actually liked Catherine Malandrino's collection. Most of the others that I've looked at were either kind of boring and expected (rock & roll, uninspired silhouettes, etc) or just plain inaccessible 'intellectually' to me.

Everything Wrong is Right

I hate taking pictures of myself. Looking over them not only confirms how I feel inside, but also the vanity and privilege inherent in an exercise like this. Posting my picture on the internet - even this relatively obscure pic - is an even a bigger thing for me, raising a myriad of anxieties. Am I too fat to post a picture of myself? Are my arms too big? But I like this picture, digital grain and all.

You'll Go to Hell

Hello Kitty Meets M-A-C

I hate myself for liking this, especially the second part. The young woman in the cat suit is so f*****. I imagine that the art director had to go for something either very stupid or something very simple. This commercial is a bit of both.

Monster Rug Thing

The aforementioned t-shirt - well, any stretchy material having shirt really - rug. I've been working on this since about December. It's finger crocheted and more than a little tedious, but I still love how it's turning out. This is in spite of how it's becoming bowl-like in the middle.
